ORIGINS: THE DREAM
Dominio de Calogía is a dream come true – a personal project that José Manuel Pérez Ovejas and his wife Silvia Ortega launched in spring 2021, looking to the future in pursuit of excellence.
Created in the French style of the domaine, the cutting-edge design of this boutique winery stands out from the spectacular vineyards that surround it, in a unique location between the towns of Roa and Pedrosa de Duero at the foot of the majestic Cuesta Manvirgo hill.
They own all of the vineyards in this special terroir, Dominio de Calogía, the pago (subdivision of land) from which the winery takes its name and that defines the style of the wine from the outset.
ORIGINS: JOSÉ MANUEL PÉREZ OVEJAS
José Manuel Pérez Ovejas is descended from a long line of winegrowers and has wine in his veins. He has been sure about his vocation since he was a child, enabling him to focus on gathering knowledge to work soundly and brilliantly as a winemaker.
His training was not only academic, but also acquired from the experience of sharing his life with a maestro: his father, Benjamín Pérez, a renowned winegrower in the industry who played an active role in setting up the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin.
José Manuel’s experience of 30 harvests, vintage after vintage, together with his solid training and plentiful intuition in addition to exacting standards, have allowed him to achieve his goal of reaching the top.
His spirit of constantly striving higher is ever present in his work as a winemaker and in the wines he makes. The industry has recognised this with awards: Winemaker of the Year 2017 and Best Winemaker in Spain 2018.
He is now taking his new project forward alone, with immense enthusiasm and passion.
ORIGINS: DESIGN
Dominio de Calogía is a small, meticulously designed modern winery where functionality and technical resources have been factored in to produce the best wine with no limitations. Aesthetically, its avant-garde lines blend into the surrounding landscape while the interior has been designed with an almost perfectionist obsession for every last detail that contributes to winemaking.
PHILOSOPHY: AUTHENTICITY AND PURITY
Authenticity and purity are the hallmarks of the style and philosophy of Dominio de Calogía by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas. This project is unique because it bears his signature, his stamp, his most personal style.
To do so it is essential to know and understand the vineyard and to opt for small production that yield a high-quality grape. As José Manuel explains, small production allows him to achieve the perfect balance in which every nuance is taken into account.
Above all, however, it is necessary to be yourself, to remain faithful to your own style and be unswayed by passing influences or trends. This is the only way to create a wine that conveys essence, depth.
“Making your dream come true with enthusiasm and determination is giving the best version of yourself” says José Manuel.
That is the spirit of Dominio de Calogía.
PHILOSOPHY: AUTHENTICITY AND PURITY
To achieve all this, Pérez Ovejas is backed by a young but very qualified and committed team.
Our philosophy is to make each harvest a great wine to be enjoyed at home by wine lovers and collectors worldwide.
“Dominio de Calogía allows me to enjoy this profession even more. My wife Silvia and I have been very excited about this project and our children Manuela and Mauro also support us. Although they’re very young, they are passionate about it. They also feel involved,” José Manuel explains.
The 2019 vintage will possibly go down as one of the best in the history of the Ribera del Duero.
The low grape production in the Domino de Calogía terroir was an advantage in the winemaking as it allowed the winemaker to fine-tune every detail to achieve the highest quality.
The first Dominio de Calogía production will be a limited edition so it will be sold using a quota system, with 50% earmarked for the international market.
Dominio de Calogía 2019 has great ageing potential, making it ideal for collectors who seek exclusive wines and who want to keep it to savour at a later date with all its nuances and witness its magnificent development in the bottle.

Dominio de Calogía by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas 2019
Very intense cherry red, concentrated, almost opaque, with a purple rim, attractively vibrant and abundant hued legs.
Deep and very intense on the nose, with a marked varietal character in which the concentrated red fruit stands out. Very fine, barely perceptible wood and very well-defined balsamic undertones that give it fascinating complexity and subtlety.
Whole and vigorous on the palate. Fleshy and with nerve, very fresh. Excellent structure with great relief, although its tannins are of great quality, very fine and well developed, providing roundness, breadth and harmony on the palate. It is opulent, creamy, well-armed and with great potential, but it has an elegance, finesse and balance that make it truly spectacular in that very long finish.
This is a wine of great depth that reflects its origin and shows the authenticity of its terroir, CALOGÍA.
Its outstanding potential (15-20 years) is to be noted, which collectors of great wines will undoubtedly appreciate.

Dominio de Calogía by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas 2020
Attractive garnet cherry red colour, high robe, enormously vivid and very bright.
Intense on the nose, with red fruit standing out on the first impression. This is followed by lilightly toasted aromas, bushland and a balsamic background. It has a very complex and fine expression of its terroir and landscape of origin.
On the palate it is balanced and very fresh, dense, meaty and with very good acidity. It is succulent with a well developed skeleton. This wine has tension, nerve and volume. Its profundity and depth stand out.
The long spicy finish foretells the long life in the bottle that awaits it.

Deep cherry and light ruby colour, well covered.
Deep, elegant, complex and intense on the nose. Nuances of nuts, graphite and charcoal emerge, enveloping the red fruit it possesses.
Savoury, structured, round, splendid acidity, noble tannins, round and silky, subtle and delicate, very well developed.
The outcome is very vibrant, smooth and velvety.
It has a spectacular and fascinating aftertaste, in which minerality and delicacy give way to an almost eternal ending.
