José Manuel Pérez Ovejas wanted to pay tribute to his children Manuela and Mauro with this red wine from a vineyard in Burgos planted at 830 metres above sea level. Neatness and finesse, great balance balance with good acidity.

Vinifying separate plots gives the winemaker the privilege of knowing the character of each vineyard. This is what happened to José Manuel Pérez Ovejas when year after year he saw how the north-facing Pago La Loma plot with sandy and pebbly soils ripened somewhat later. There is a well-defined style for the cool vintage that it was. Predominant fruit notes with a very precise point of seasoning. The mineral background makes it elegant and complex. Liquorice notes and a masterfully distributed barrel. Fleshy, fresh, tasty and with sweet tannins that are a delight. It can be enjoyed now, but it has the capacity to evolve in the bottle.

In the latest issue of the magazine PlanetaVino, nº 114 of the month of June-July, the prestigious journalist Andrés Proensa scores it with 96 points, titling it:

If it’s an even year, a new Calogia arrives. In recent times, the young project of José Manuel Pérez Ovejas has been bringing in new references at a rate of one every two years. He launched it in 2019 with a single initial wine that saw the light of day in 2021; the following year he launched Dominio de Calogia Cuvée S, presented as a wine of greater selection; the third one arrives now and it is a more accessible proposal in terms of price. Not in style, because Dominio de Calogia has always been modern, fruity and fresh, with a careful management of the riparian grape variety and oak ageing. And, always, without leaving the heart of the Ribera burgalesa, that privileged area of Roa, la Horra, Pedrosa, La Aguilera, Anguix…
Doble M explores the freshest line of the Ribera de Duero, without losing a noble energy, without tannic pastiness, a style that links with the approach of this winery and with the vanguard of the reds of the area, many nuances in a deep, concentrated nose, based on the fruity expression of good maturity, black fruits, blue flowers, with floral notes (lilacs) and balsamic and a spicy touch of well-measured ageing. With a lot of nerve in the mouth, it does not lack body or consistency, with a clear reference to the caste of the area, but the acidity and balance give it a plus of finesse; tasty, ample and fine in aromas, long.

The Master of Wine, Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW, has written this comment in the IWSC- Club Oenologique “THE SPAIN REPORT 2024” in which he mentions our DOMINIO DE CALOGÍA 2021, and highlights it among the Great Wines of the Ribera del Duero, awarding it a score of 95 points.

“Again, classic powerful and assertive Spanish styles coexist with very modern, subtle and delicate interpretations. Dominio de Calogía, Sei Solo or Bosque de Matasnos are probably in the latter group, now rubbing shoulders with the great representatives of the classic style: renowned Ribera wineries such as Vega-Sicilia, Carraovejas or Valtravieso. I think that most of the top-scoring wines within the Ribera del Duero Report are extremely likely to improve over long periods of time, whichever the wine style”

The prestigious journalist Pedro Ballesteros MW includes it in the selection of the best wines of Ribera del Duero, which have obtained more than 95 points. In this report he places Dominio de Calogía as a clear example of a wine whose style “is based on concentration, very ripe fruit, intense oak ageing (less and less evident) and density, with great balance”, considering it among the greatest of the Ribera Del Duero.

He describes it as follows:

Amazingly ripe fruit, at that magical point when black and blue berries are not yet plums.
Intensely oaked, because it is made for the long run. It is big but round, quite impressive on
the attack, but with a gentle and suave touch. Its parsimonious finish demands alot of
attention in order to grasp its complexity. A great Roa wine made by José Manuel Pérez
Ovejas. a founder of the greatest Ribera style when he was at Pérez Pascuas. This wine should be kept in bottle for several years.

Dominio de Calogía, true to its philosophy of site-based winemaking, launches Doble M, from the La Loma estate. The vineyard is located at an altitude of 830 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region of Burgos. The vines, 25 years old, are planted on clay soils, with a sandy and pebbly part. This unique stratigraphy brings elegance and finesse to a red wine in which subtlety and expressiveness predominate.

Dominio de Calogía is a project led by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas. Double M has a special meaning: they are the initials of Manuela and Mauro, the children of José Manuel Pérez and Silvia Ortega. It represents a look into the future of Dominio de Calogía, a way of giving continuity to its tradition and dedication.

Doble M 2020 was bottled in March 2022, after 12 months in French Allier barrels. The production, which is very limited, is only 14,856 bottles of 75 cl. It will be sold exclusively through quotas, like other wines of the winery.

“It is a very different vineyard from those around it. We decided to vinify its grapes separately to try to visualise its depth and depth”, says José Manuel Pérez Ovejas, winemaker and director of the winery. “It ripens a few days later precisely because of its northern orientation and less fertile soil. Also for this reason, the grapes from La Loma are the last to enter the winery. We always want to make the best wine, but to do so we have to be patient and apply common sense in order to achieve the ideal balance. It gives very little production, but what might seem a defect contributes to the search for excellence that identifies each of the wines of this project”.

The 2020 vintage is characterised by its freshness, which gives Doble M a very Atlantic profile and allows it to exhibit ideal balance and exquisite harmony. The style that identifies all Dominio de Calogía wines takes advantage in this case of the very personality that this site brings to the wine, giving it a predictable longevity. Its balanced acidity and minerality highlight the singularity and differentiation that is sought after when making the wine, thanks to a very non-interventionist winemaking process. The respectful and rational viticulture practised at La Loma has allowed for an optimal interpretation of the terroir of origin, with the intention of reflecting its imprint in the wine.

Dominio de Calogía Doble M coincides with the fifth anniversary of the birth of the company. It reflects the winery’s self-demanding approach to the production of single-vineyard wines. Like Calogía and Cuvée S, it is in line with the brand’s ambitious objectives.
