As described by the author of this article, the renowned journalist Ignacio Pérez Lorenz, recently published in Revista del Vino:
He describes Dominio de Calogía Doble M 2022, a wine from the “La Loma” vineyard parcel, as having “pronounced freshness and beauty in its fruity expression, fluidity and precision wrapped in a minimal touch of opulence, with balanced definition that firmly drives it along the path of elegance.”
In this dry and hot vintage, the vineyard was managed differently, avoiding leaf thinning in order to keep the grape clusters shaded and to fine-tune the harvest date with precision. Extraction was kept limited, and a cautious use of oak also proved decisive.
The prestigious publication JamesSuckling.com has awarded the highest score in the Denomination of Origin, giving Dominio de Calogía Cuvée S 2021 a 95/100.
Under the article title “THE POLISH AND PRECISION OF RIBERA,” the taster and senior editor, Zekun Shuai, states:
While Ribera del Duero is known for its full-bodied, tannic reds, a new wave of producers is championing polish and precision over pure force. A prime example is the opulent yet fresh Dominio de Calogía Ribera del Duero S Cuvée 2021, recently tasted by Senior Editor Zekun Shuai.
Launched in 2019 by winemaker Jose Manuel Perez Ovejas, this project sources fruit from a 1.5-hectare plot of 70-year-old vines. The resulting wine is plush yet really restrained, layered and finely structured. The ancient vines in Roa and Pedrosa de Duero demonstrate how precise winemaking and low-yield vineyards can produce wines that are both hedonistic and refined.
The old vines from Roa and Pedrosa de Duero demonstrate how precise winemaking and low-yield vineyards can produce hedonistic and refined wines, thanks to a crafting process that enhances complexity without being overwhelming. The best producers now prioritize refinement and precision, and Dominio de Calogía represents this new style in Ribera del Duero.”
We are tremendously proud of this achievement, which affirms the unique character and exceptional quality of Dominio de Calogía, consolidating it as one of Spain’s great wines.
Zekun Shuai concludes: “This project by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas is generating great interest.”
Dominio de Calogía Cuvée ‘S’ 2021 has been one of the most acclaimed wines in the recent “Ribera del Duero 2025” report, published by the prestigious specialist media outlet Cluboenologique. Master of Wine Pedro Ballesteros has awarded it an outstanding score of 96 points, placing it on the podium of the great wines from Ribera del Duero.
This exceptional rating demonstrates the consistency and reliability of this winery, which in just a few years has managed to establish itself among the elite of Spanish winemaking.
In the introduction to his article, Pedro Ballesteros MW states: “If one wants to proceed down the classic path towards increasing depth and complexity, an excellent proposal is Dominio de Calogía, a winery created by José Manuel Pérez Ovejas in Burgos a few years ago. The fact that he is now among the top wineries is by no means down to serendipity but the result of his long experience at Pérez Pascuas and his excellent vineyards.”.
We share the recent interview with José Manuel Pérez Ovejas in ONDA CERO TALAVERA by Angel Monterrubio and Raquel Iglesias in the section “In memory”.
It is very entertaining, because it reflects in a very didactic way the particularities of the Calogía domain project, its philosophy and concept so differentiated in Ribera del Duero.
Dominio de Calogía 2020 is one of the 10 Ribera del Duero wines selected for setting a new, fresher and more fluid trend. He describes it as an original Tempranillo, with aromas and flavours that the prestigious and influential prescriber claims not to have observed in this variety at this level of concentration.
Yesterday we had the privilege of receiving this important visit from wine professionals and the Milenio group, where we were able to taste the winery’s three wines.
It is worth remembering that Dominio de Calogía is already present in Mexico in the best wine shops and restaurants of the country, thanks to Marinter.
Thank you very much C.R.D.O Ribera del Duero for your organization.
The 2020 Cuvée S shares the style with the rest of the wines—concentrated, powerful. a bit lactic and very spicy and smoky. Its lush and full-bodied, with 14.6% alcohol, keeping the freshness and balance. It’s a popular profile of Ribera del Duero: serious wines that are ripe and generously oaked.
This matured in French Allier barrels, one-third af them new, for 26 months. It needs a little more time in bottle. 3,475 bottles and 363 maanums were filled in June 2023.
